About our annuals this year…

We had a small fire but large amount of smoke in one of our greenhouses four weeks ago. No one was hurt! Except the plants – the smoke was extensive and many of our annual flowers suffered.

The effect of heavy smoke on plants is…unpredictable. Damage ranged from none-at-all, to some leaf damage followed by encouraging regrowth, to outright collapse. We’ve since been composting, crying, pruning, reordering & replanting at a furious rate to recover as best we can.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT – many of our single pot annuals, 10″ and 12″ mixed hanging baskets are a few weeks behind. While smaller than usual for this point in the season, they are growing well and will catch up provided we get some sun! We think our recovery has gone pretty well (and much better than we had hoped for 3 weeks ago!). We’re sure you can find something to your liking. On the plus side, our aggressive replanting means we will have more potted annuals, hanging baskets and containers than ever before.

COMPLETELY UNNAFFECTED – our veggies, herbs, and other edibles. All perennials, trees and shrubs. The bulk of our cell-pack annual flowers – marigolds, impatiens, cosmos, zinnias, and more. Our cheerful dispositions. Large fibre and moss baskets.

Every year brings new challenges and triumphs, and as is typical, we head into this year with the optimistic gardener’s motto “next year will be better!”
